Is your office recycling everything it can? Do people know what's recyclable and what isn't? It's important that we divert as much waste as we can from landfills, here are some reasons why:

  • * Landfill sites account for roughly 38% of Canada's methane gas emissions. Methane is one of the main greenhouse gases responsible for global warming.
  • * Even biodegradable waste will struggle to decompose in landfills. This is because waste in landfills gets little sunlight, moisture and oxygen—all of which are needed for decomposition.
  • * Plastics will take 500 to 1,000 years to decompose in landfills.
  • * Glass bottles will take 1,000,000 years to decompose in landfills.

Make recycling bins easily accessible.

People will throw recyclable waste into garbage cans if there are no other options nearby, so the more recycling bins you have throughout the office, the better. Be sure to also place them in cafeterias, kitchens, bathrooms and common gathering areas.

Ensure everyone around the offices knows what can be recycled.

Post lists of recyclable materials on or alongside all recycling bins. If you're unsure about what can be recycled where you work, visit the local, municipal website.

Recycle your electronic waste.

Things like computers, cell phones and batteries contain chemicals that need to be kept out of landfills. There are companies and organizations, and even many municipal offices, that will take your electronic waste and either dispose of it safely, or fix it up so that it can be used again.

  • Electronics manufacturers and related service providers often have programs in place to recycle their products. Information is usually available on company websites.
  • Many office supply companies offer electronic waste collection. Ask your own office supply company what options they have available.
  • A number of electronic recycling companies exist in Ontario. These companies can help you safely dispose of major items like computers, and can also help you set-up in-office recycling programs for batteries, printer cartridges and light bulbs.
